ALSAGER Friday 13th March 2015
And so it came to pass that another Alsager trip took place on the fated Friday 13th. This was somewhat marginally better populated than last time.
It must have been quite an uplifting experience for those folk who have to live in the smog and squalor of Stoke and Newcastle, since Alsager is known for its poshness and general all round better class of people. Those from Stoke can only stand back and admire the better class of folk here across the border in Cheshire so much so that it has been proposed in the forthcoming election that the border to the South East to Staffs be closed to stop migrants coming and spoiling the tone of this wonderful Cheshire village.
THE PLAYERS
Yup, Anytime Tone, Pedro, Craigee 50/50, Stubbee, Bolt, Jay Cee, Ali Gee, 2 Pies.
ACT 2
The first whiff of rebellion was felt in our second venue The Bank Corner right by the Crossroads in the middle of Alsager. This Pub had been the Cooperative foodstore in Alsager until the Coop relocated across the road. There was a shortage of real ale and the atmosphere was dead even on a Friday night.
YELLOW CARDS
In order to crush the rebellion two yellow cards were issued to one 50/50 Budweiser and Yuppy Blackcurrant and soda for not partaking of the real ale on offer being J W Lees bitter and Titanic Nautical mild. Anyway there was a great view across to the Civic centre and the Library and bus spotters could settle down and note the numbers of the passing No 3 bus. It was so bad in there, although the J W Lees was not that bad, we left for the next hostelry.
ACT 3
The renowned Mere Inn was next. It was heaving as it was when last visited in Jan 14. The beer was good being Joules from Market Drayton. The two favoured tipples were Slumbering Monk and Joules Bitter although the bar staff putting their fingers in the beer was frowned upon.
YELLOW CARD
Was issued to 2PHDSC for causing his beer to jump off the table without touching it-a real Harry Potter moment. The bar staff were unbelievably excellent in not only clearing up the mess but giving me a new pint. That doesn't happen everywhere - I shall come back here again.
YELLOW CARDS
Were also issued to Messrs 50/50, Stubbee and Bolt who had sneaked off to the Lodge. They were admonished and brought back in time for the indian.
ACT 4
The Indian spice was the final curry stop-and a good curry was to be had. It was puzzling to see the Indian Heaven next door almost full and ours the Indian Spice nearly empty. Cobra was the chosen drink which I think always goes better with curry. Maybe we should try Latifs or Indian Heaven next time as long as the visit to the Bank Corner has not put everyone off.
ACT 1
The first hostelry was also the best of the evening where 2 Pies had grabbed a corner for seating. There was no fire so Yuppy stayed unscorched. 3 Tuns from Bishops Castle and St Edmunds from Bury St Edmunds were two of the real ales tried. Pedro took advantage of the free samples on top of his full to the brim mugs. Also this pub was a real paradise since they gave 10% Camra discount to members. The pub itself was initially called The Yeoman and had been severely run down and actually closed around 5 years ago. It was completely refurbished and renamed and now is the place to go in Alsager for real ale and a great atmosphere. However in the tradition of pub crawling we had to leave.
Not only was the curry good but so were the chocolates which were devoured before Pedro could open his glasses case. Stubbee held his hands up as the guilty party. Ali G said nowt.....
